Beat the Heat: Essential Summer Safety Tips for Truck Drivers

Anyone who has spent time on the road knows that a Texas summer is no joke. By the time July rolls around, the asphalt is melting, the cab AC is working overtime, and the humidity along the Gulf Coast can take your breath away.

At Seashore Transportation, our drivers are the backbone of everything we do. While we pride ourselves on moving freight safely and efficiently from our home base in La Porte across the nation, our absolute number one priority is making sure our drivers make it home safely at the end of every run.

High summer temperatures bring unique challenges to the open road—both for your body and your rig. To help you stay sharp, comfortable, and safe this month, we’ve put together the ultimate summer safety checklist for truck drivers.

1. Hydration is Non-Negotiable

When you’re sitting in an air-conditioned cab, it’s easy to forget how much water your body is losing. By the time you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.

  • The Rule: Don’t just rely on coffee and energy drinks—caffeine can actually accelerate dehydration. Keep a cooler stocked with plenty of water and electrolyte-rich beverages.

  • Pro-Tip: Aim to drink water consistently throughout your shift, not just during your scheduled stops.

2. Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

When you step out of the cab to inspect a load or handle a drop, the Texas heat hits hard and fast. Every driver needs to know how to recognize when their body is redlining.

  • Watch for: Dizziness, heavy sweating, a rapid pulse, muscle cramps, headache, or nausea.

  • The Action: If you or a fellow driver start experiencing these symptoms, get into the shade or an AC-cooled space immediately, sip cool water, and loosen any tight clothing. Never “tough it out.”

3. Keep a Close Eye on Tire Pressure

Melting asphalt and heavy loads are a brutal combination for rubber. Summer is prime season for tire blowouts, which endanger you and everyone sharing the highway with you.

  • The Checklist: High temperatures cause the air inside your tires to expand. Never bleed air out of a hot tire, but do perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections to check for proper inflation, signs of tread separation, or sidewall damage.

4. Ensure Your Rig’s Systems are Prime

Your truck needs to stay just as cool as you do. A breakdown in July isn’t just an inconvenience; sitting on a boiling shoulder waiting for roadside assistance is a legitimate safety hazard.

  • The Inspection: Before you head out, check your coolant levels and inspect hoses for any signs of cracking or leaks.

  • Don’t Ignore the AC: Make sure your air conditioning system is blowing ice-cold. Your cab is your office and your sanctuary—if the AC is struggling in the yard, get it checked out before you hit the highway.
